CHILDRENS BOOKS

Intro

Helping as many children as possible though therapy is a hard challenge to set oneself. However, it is one that Sue Steer is passionate about. Counselling children can involve the use of art, story telling and creative methods to help explore thoughts, feelings and experiences. As a counsellor it can be hard to keep coming up with new creative activities and ways to engage children as they attend counselling sessions for lots of different reasons. Sue Steer’s books aim to help with this. These books aim to help children with their worries and muddles, learn emotional regulation and that talking really does help...

Bea’s Busy Brain

A book based off Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

This reassuring children’s story is closely linked to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) in which Bea is taught how to explore emotional and rational thinking, capturing how important it is to acknowledge our worries. This book provides children with an introduction to counselling in a fun and easy to understand way, offering positive self-talk and self-care strategies to help and encourage children to cope.

It is aimed at children between 2 – 8 years and can be used by parents or caregivers as well as teachers, counsellors and other professionals to generate a conversation around worries and muddles, or to introduce counselling to a child.

Bea’s story is a fantastic way to help spark conversations with children about good mental health.

The Lumpy Bumpy Rug

This is a delightfully funny yet cautionary tale that underscores the importance of addressing feelings rather than sweeping them under the rug-quite literally!   This lively and funny story is crafted with humour and heart and invites you into the Fitzgerald’s home in which they have a very unusual problem.   You see they have stated brushing their feelings under the rug!  How will they solve this extraordinary issue!

Written by Sue Steer a counsellor this story serves as a gentle reminder to children and adults alike about the importance of emotional honesty and communication.

"The Lumpy Bumpy Rug" is more than just a tale of caution; it's a call to action—a prompt for readers to reflect on their own emotional communication and the importance of facing feelings head-on. This book fosters a safe space for dialogue about emotions, encouraging children to speak up about their feelings and understand that it's okay to express themselves. In doing so, it not only entertains but also educates.  The Lumpy Bumpy Rug is a treasure trove of laughs and lessons, making it a must-read for anyone who has ever felt the urge to hide their emotions away.

Book Testimonials

"My daughter often has issues with controlling her emotions when she gets overwhelmed. We read this book together and it really helped her understand how to deal with her feelings. She’s now drawn her own ‘Brain Bestie’ and ‘Brain Bully’ to help her and I can already see the change in her actions when she’s got something on her mind."

"I would definitely recommend this not only anyone who wants to help their child understand how to better deal with their emotions but also for parents too."

"I am a primary school teacher and will use this book to support 'my children' understand and work through their worries and anxieties. It is beautifully illustrated and written in a way that makes it very accessible to young children. An excellent addition to my classroom!"

"This book is very well written & illustrated and helps children & young people understand more about their mental & wellbeing. As a cbt practitioner working with children I have found this book extremely helpful to support children to understand in a fun way how to identify their way of thinking & feeling & most importantly positive ways to manage this. I have used this book as a way to support children to understand a little more about what therapy/counselling entails to reassure them & encourage their engagement. I would highly recommend this book to other professionals working in therapeutic/pastoral roles & also for parents & caregivers to read with their child to create discussion around positive wellbeing."

"Bea’s busy brain is fantastic! The narrative has a gentle way of explaining how worry can be exasperated, and how it can be managed by opening up and seeking support."

"As a parent of two young boys this book is brilliant to engage conversations around mental health. It helps to discuss ways in which worry can present, and what tools you can utilise to identify and make changes to the way anxiety presents itself."

"Fantastic book for children and adults alike! Explains well why we feel like we do in a beautifully illustrated, easy to read book. Great that it's the work of a trained counsellor too! I'm hoping for a follow up book! My sons loved it too!"
